The Mets and Giants began a three-game series at Shea Stadium on a Friday night. David Cone pitched a complete game six-hitter and recorded 13 strikeouts. The Mets defeated San Francisco, 1-0.
The Giants got leadoff singles and stolen bases in each of the first two innings against Cone. David countered with two strikeouts in each inning to keep them scoreless. Meanwhile, the Mets got a first inning run when Dave Magadan doubled off San Francisco starter Bill Swift and scored on a single by Howard Johnson.
In the third, Cone allowed only a single to Kevin Bass and followed up with a perfect fourth. He gave up singles in the fifth and sixth, but no Giant runs. David struck out a batter in each of the four innings.
Cone struck out Swift and Willie McGee in a scoreless seventh inning. In the eighth, he surrendered a single by Greg Litton, but also struck out Cory Snyder and Robby Thompson in keeping his shutout intact. David then fanned Kirt Manwaring to start a perfect ninth inning to end the game. The Mets had a win on Cone's fifth shutout of the season.
