The Mets faced the Reds in a Sunday doubleheader at Shea Stadium. In the opener, Galen Cisco and Cincinnati’s Joey Jay squared off in a tight pitchers duel. A pair of doubles in the ninth inning gave the Mets a 1-0 win.
Cisco and Jay each hurled shutout ball from the first inning to the eighth. Galen scattered six hits and issued four walks in shutting down the Reds. Meanwhile, the Mets were held to four singles, a walk and a hit batsman in coming up empty against Jay. Only one runner (Cincinnati’s Deron Johnson in the top of the second) got as far as third base through the first eight innings. Cisco then continued his shutout quest with a scoreless top of the ninth.
To begin the bottom of the ninth inning, Jay retired Frank Thomas on a ground ball to third baseman Tommy Harper. George Altman followed with a double to right field. An ensuing double by Joe Christopher drove home Altman to end the game. The Mets had an exciting victory to start off the twinbill.
