On the first day after the All-Star break, the Mets faced the Pirates on a sunny Thursday afternoon at Shea Stadium. Pat Zachry pitched masterfully, holding the defending World Champions to only three hits in a complete game shutout. The Mets won, 2-0.
The game's only scoring came in the third inning. Lee Mazzilli hit a home run off Pittsburgh's John Candelaria for the Mets' first run. Later in the inning, John Stearns' sacrifice fly brought home Frank Taveras to give New York a two-run lead.
The Pirates had a scoring chance in the fourth. With one out, John Milner hit a double off Zachry and Pittsburgh loaded the bases. Phil Garner then lined out to first baseman Stearns, who threw to Taveras covering second for an inning-ending double play.
Pat kept the Pirates hitless for the last five innings, issuing only three walks and nothing else. The second half of the season got off to a good start for Zachry and the Mets.
