In August of 1990, the Mets made a deal to enhance their chances for a division title. The team acquired catcher Charlie O'Brien and a player to be named later (Kevin Carmody on September 11) from the Milwaukee Brewers for pitchers Julio Machado and Kevin Brown. O'Brien was a five-year major leaguer who brought some needed catching experience to the Mets. Carmody was an A-level pitcher. Machado had become a regular part of the Mets' bullpen during the '90 season while Brown was a minor league prospect who appeared in two major league games.

Although they did not win the division in '90, the Mets got the better end of the trade. O'Brien played 232 games in four seasons with the team. He collected 123 hits and 59 runs batted in during his days in New York. Carmody never reached the major leagues.

In two seasons with the Brewers, Machado had three wins and six saves in 64 relief appearances to end his career. Brown won three games and had a 4.78 earned run average in 20 games for the Milwaukee team. He was then claimed on waivers by the Seattle Mariners.
