Juan Samuel

Juan Samuel was a center fielder for the Mets in 1989. He had 76 hits for 110 total bases in 86 games played with the team. Samuel was hit by a pitch 10 times to lead the Mets in '89.

After six years with the Phillies, Samuel came to the Mets in a trade for Len Dykstra, Roger McDowell and Tom Edens on June 18, 1989. At Cincinnati on June 30, he singled three times and scored twice in the Mets' 11-1 win. In a four-game series against the Reds at Shea from July 6 to July 9, Juan had eight hits as the Mets won three times. In the last of these games, he hit his first home run as a Met in the team's 6-3 victory. At Philadelphia on August 9, Samuel singled and homered against his former Phillies team in a 6-0 Mets win. He also got a run-scoring single in the ninth inning to give the Mets a 3-2 triumph over the Cubs at Shea on September 5.

On December 20, 1989, Samuel was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers for Mike Marshall and Alejandro Pena. He played for the Dodgers until 1992, during which he was dealt to the Kansas City Royals. Samuel also played for the Reds, Tigers and Blue Jays before the end of his career in 1998.

Samuel went on to a become a coach and manager. In 2006, he served as the manager of the Mets' AA-level team in Binghamton. Juan also managed 51 games for the Baltimore Orioles in 2010.
