The Mets and Cardinals made a deal of Mexican-born pitchers before the start of the 1998 season. Righthander Juan Acevedo was sent to St. Louis in exchange for lefthander Rigo Beltran. Acevedo had a 3-1 won-lost record with a 3.59 earned run average for the Mets in 1997. Beltran had a 3.48 ERA in 35 games in his only season with the Cardinals.
Beltran made 28 relief appearances for the Mets in 1998 and 1999. He had one win, one loss and no saves while posting a 3.46 ERA. Rigo was traded to the Rockies during the '99 season.
Acevedo pitched in a total of 100 games (50 in '98, 50 in '99) for the Cardinals. He had a 14-11 won-lost record in his two seasons with the St. Louis team. Juan was dealt to the Milwaukee Brewers by the Cards after the '99 season.
