Jose Oquendo was a shortstop for the Mets in 1983 and 1984. He had 112 hits in 201 games played with the team. Oquendo had 52 runs scored and 127 total bases as a Met.

Oquendo joined the Mets as a 19-year-old rookie in '83. He singled for his first major league hit in a 7-4 Mets win over the Reds at Shea Stadium on May 6. Jose drove in three runs with two singles in the Mets' 11-4 victory at Pittsburgh on May 16. He batted .433 (13-for-30) during an eight-game hitting streak from June 10 to June 18. At San Francisco on August 21, Oquendo hit his first major league home run in the Mets' 4-3 triumph over the Giants. He also had three singles and a run scored in a 6-3 Mets win over the Giants on August 27 at Shea.

In 1984, Oquendo appeared in 81 games for the Mets. He had 10 stolen bases and 10 RBIs during the season. Jose had three singles, two runs scored and a stolen base in the Mets' 8-1 win at Houston on April 6. He had an eight-game hitting streak from May 5 to May 15. Oquendo had a two-run double in a 6-0 Mets victory on June 14 at St. Louis. He scored the winning run in the ninth inning for a 6-5 Mets triumph and a doubleheader sweep over the Reds at Shea on July 6. Jose singled twice in the Mets' 10-0 win over the Cubs on September 7 at Shea. He also scored the official winning run on Rusty Staub's ninth-inning two-run homer that gave the Mets a 6-4 victory over the Phillies at Shea on September 25.

Oquendo was traded to the Cardinals on April 2, 1985. He played for two National League pennant winners in ten seasons with the St. Louis team. Jose appeared in a total of 989 games as a Cardinal. In 1988, he played all nine defensive positions during the year.
