Jose Cardenal was an outfielder for the Mets in 1979 and 1980. He played in a total of 37 games with the team. Cardenal had 18 hits for 29 total bases as a Met.

Cardenal came to the Mets from the Phillies on August 2, 1979. He batted .297 over the rest of the season. In his first game with the team, Jose doubled twice and drove in a run in a 3-2 Mets win at Montreal on August 4. He had a double and a home run in the first game of a doubleheader the next day as the Mets defeated the Expos, 4-2. Cardenal had two singles and two runs scored in the Mets' 18-5 victory at Atlanta on August 14. He also homered in a 6-3 Mets win at Atlanta on August 16.

In 1980, Cardenal appeared in 26 games for the Mets. He had a pair of singles in a 3-2 Mets win over the Reds in 10 innings at Shea on May 5. In a doubleheader opener at Wrigley Field on June 25, Jose had an RBI single and a run scored in a 9-1 Mets victory over the Cubs. He also had a pinch-hit sacrifice fly to drive in a run as the Mets defeated the Expos, 9-5, in the first game of a July 4 doubleheader at Shea.

Cardenal was released by the Mets on August 13, 1980. He completed the season with the Kansas City Royals. Jose batted .340 for the Royals en route to their American League West Division title. He concluded his 18-year career in the '80 World Series with the Kansas City team.
