John Mitchell was a pitcher for the Mets from 1986 to 1989. He pitched 125 and two-thirds innings over 27 games with the team. Mitchell recorded 3 wins and 64 strikeouts as a Met.

Mitchell came to the Mets from the Red Sox' organization in a multi-player deal in November of 1985. In '86, he spent the season at AAA-level Tidewater (based in Norfolk, Virginia) before making four appearances with the Mets in September. John made his first major league start against the Phillies on September 21 at Shea Stadium.

In 1987, Mitchell pitched in 20 games as a Met. He got his first career win with a complete game five-hitter as the Mets defeated the Phillies, 8-1, at Shea on June 19. In the second game of a doubleheader at Shea on July 24, John was the winning pitcher in a 7-4 Mets triumph over the Astros. Mitchell also got the win in the Mets' 13-3 victory over the Phillies on August 5 at Shea.

In 1988 and 1989, Mitchell pitched for the Tidewater team. He made three relief appearances for the Mets over the two years. Following the '89 season, John was traded to the Baltimore Orioles. He pitched in 24 games for the Orioles in 1990 to conclude his major league career.
