The Mets looked to enhance their bench strength during the 1998 season. To achieve this, the team acquired the versatile Lenny Harris in exchange for pitcher John Hudek. Harris, who was in his 11th major league season, could play many infield and outfield positions and serve as a prime pinch-hitter. Hudek had four years of major league service.
Harris played in 75 games for the Mets over the rest of the '98 season. He collected 39 hits for 64 total bases and drove in 17 runs. Lenny joined the Colorado Rockies as a free agent the following November.
Hudek pitched in 30 games for the Reds in '98. He had a 4-2 won-lost record and a 2.43 earned run average over the remainder of the season. John was traded to the Braves by the Cincinnati team in 1999.
