From The Met Wiki
John Gibbons was a catcher for the Mets in 1984 and 1986. He had 11 hits in 18 games with the team. Gibbons had 18 total bases and scored five runs as a Met.
Gibbons was selected by the Mets with the 24th overall pick in the draft in 1980. He reached the major leagues in '84, but started the season on the disabled list due to a fractured cheekbone suffered in a spring training game. John made his debut on April 11, getting his first major league run batted in during the Mets' 6-1 win at Atlanta. Gibbons singled for his first major league hit in the Mets' home opener on April 17. One day later, John drew a crucial two-out walk and scored the winning run in the ninth inning for a 5-4 Mets victory over the Expos at Shea Stadium.
After spending the 1985 season with the Mets' Tidewater team in Norfolk, Virginia, Gibbons rejoined the parent club in '86. He collected 9 hits in 19 at bats for a .474 batting average during the Mets' championship season. Against the Cardinals at Shea on August 17, John had a single, a double and two runs scored in the Mets' 9-2 win in the second game of a doubleheader. He was at the center of a double play with a tag of Garry Templeton at the plate and a throw to third base to finish off a 6-5 Mets triumph in 11 innings at San Diego on August 27. Gibbons also had a single, two doubles and his only major league home run in the Mets' 9-5 win over the Phillies at Shea on September 20.
After another season in the minor leagues, Gibbons was traded to the Dodgers for Craig Shipley. He played three more seasons in the minors to close out his career as a player. John later became a manager for the Mets affiliates at Kingsport (1995), St. Lucie (1996-1997), Binghamton (1998) and Norfolk (1999-2001). He also managed the Toronto Blue Jays from 2003 to 2008.
