Joe McEwing was an infielder and outfielder for the Mets from 2000 to 2004. He had 255 hits in 502 games played with the team. McEwing had 365 total bases as a Met.

McEwing came to the Mets in a trade with the Cardinals on March 18, 2000. During his first year in New York, he appeared in 87 games at six different defensive positions. At Shea Stadium on May 21, Joe had two doubles, a homer and scored the winning run in the Mets’ 7-6 victory over the Diamondbacks. He had a pair of doubles and two runs scored in a 6-2 Mets win at St. Louis on May 28. McEwing had three singles in a 4-3 Mets loss on July 13 at Boston. He hit a pinch-hit two-run single that put the Mets ahead to stay in a 5-3 triumph at Montreal on July 19. Joe had a single, double and two runs batted in as the Mets defeated the Diamondbacks, 6-1, on August 4 at Phoenix. He also drove in a pair of runs in a 13-3 Mets win over the D’Backs at Shea on August 25.

In 2001, McEwing batted .283 with 8 home runs and 30 RBIs. He led the team by getting hit with a pitch 10 times during the season. Joe had a single, homer, stolen base and two RBIs in the Mets’ 6-5 win in 11 innings at St. Louis on April 28. He hit a two-run homer in a 10-0 Mets victory on June 10 at Tampa Bay. At Chicago on June 27, Joe slugged a two-run homer to start a Mets comeback for a 5-4 win over the Cubs. He singled twice and doubled home two runs in a 6-2 Mets triumph over the Blue Jays on July 15 at Shea. McEwing had a double and a pair of run-scoring singles in the Mets’ 5-2 victory at Florida on July 25. He also had three hits and two runs scored in a 7-6 Mets defeat to the Cardinals in 10 innings on August 10 at Shea.

Plagued by injuries, McEwing appeared in 105 games for the Mets in 2002. He scored 22 runs and had 39 hits for the year. At Shea on April 4, Joe hit a leadoff home run in the first inning of the Mets’ eventual 3-2 loss to the Pirates. He had a two-run homer in a 10-1 Mets win at Arizona on April 30. McEwing hit a game-winning three-run homer in the sixth inning for a 4-3 Mets triumph over the Rockies on May 11 at Shea. He singled home a pair of runs in the first inning of the Mets’ 5-2 win at San Diego on May 18. Joe had two singles, a stolen base and three RBIs in a 10-5 Mets victory on August 27 at Florida. He also had a three-run double in the Mets’ 11-8 loss at Montreal on September 13.

McEwing hit .241 during the 2003 season. He had 67 hits for 81 total bases during the year. Joe singled three times and scored a run in the Mets’ 4-2 win over the Padres in 10 innings at Shea on May 10. He had a single, a double and an RBI in a 5-1 Mets victory on May 18 at San Francisco. McEwing scored the winning run in the ninth inning for a 7-6 Mets triumph over the Expos at Shea on July 1. He singled, doubled and scored a run in a 7-2 Mets win on July 4 at Cincinnati. Joe hit his only home run of the year in an 8-6 Mets victory at Philadelphia on July 21. One day later, he had a single, two doubles and two runs scored in the Mets’ 7-5 victory over the Phils.

In 2004, McEwing had 138 at bats in 75 games played. An injured left leg put him on the disabled list for the last seven weeks of the season. Joe had a single and a three-run homer in a 7-5 Mets loss to the Brewers at Shea on May 7. He had a run-scoring double in an 8-3 Mets win on May 14 at Houston. McEwing had two singles and three RBIs in the Mets’ 12-3 victory at Milwaukee on August 3. The next day, he tripled and had a two-run single in a 6-5 Mets triumph over the Brewers. Joe singled, doubled and scored two runs in the Mets’ 10-6 win over the Diamondbacks on August 13 at Shea. He also had two singles and a run scored in a 10-3 Mets victory in the first game of a doubleheader at Colorado on August 19.

McEwing was released by the Mets during spring training in 2005. He played for the Kansas City Royals during the ’05 season. Joe ended his career with the Houston Astros in 2006.
