The Mets and Cardinals made a trade during Spring Training in 2000. Veteran pitcher Jesse Orosco, reacquired by the Mets the previous December, was sent to St. Louis in exchange for infielder Joe McEwing. Orosco had been a Mets standout in the 1980s, but was by this time a journeyman reliever who would soon turn 43 years old. McEwing had only one full year of major league experience.
McEwing played in 502 games for the Mets from 2000 to 2004. He collected 255 hits and 107 runs batted in with the team. Joe appeared in 11 post-season games with the Mets in 2000.
Orosco pitched in 6 games for the Cardinals in 2000. He faced a total of 16 batters and had a 3.86 earned run average with the St. Louis team. Jesse joined the Dodgers as a free agent the following season.
