The Mets and Reds made a deal at the trade deadline in 1984. Pitcher Bruce Berenyi came to New York from Cincinnati. The Mets sent prospects Jay Tibbs, Eddie Williams and Matt Bullinger to the Reds. Berenyi was a veteran in his fifth season in the major leagues. Tibbs and Bullinger were up-and-coming pitchers in the Mets' system. Williams was a third baseman with two seasons of A-level experience.

For the Mets, Berenyi pitched 168 and one-third innings in 36 games. He had a 12-8 won-lost record and a 4.28 earned run average from '84 to the middle of the 1986 season.

Tibbs had 16 wins and 18 losses with a 3.59 ERA in 49 games with the Reds. Williams was taken by the Cleveland Indians in the Rule 5 Draft without ever playing for Cincinnati. Bullinger never reached the major leagues.
