Jay Hook was a pitcher for the Mets from 1962 to 1964. In 81 games, he pitched 376 innings and recorded 207 strikeouts. Hook had total of 12 wins as a member of the team.

Hook joined the Mets from the Cincinnati Reds in the expansion draft on October 10, 1961. In the team's inaugural season, he led all Mets pitchers with 34 starts and tied with Roger Craig for the team lead in complete games with 13. On April 23, Jay threw a five-hitter as the Mets defeated the Pirates, 9-1, at Pittsburgh for their first win ever. In the game, he had a two-run single to help his own cause. Hook pitched a complete game for the win in a 13-2 Mets victory over the Colt .45s at the Polo Grounds on June 23. He also struck out 10 Pirate batters in a complete game, 10-inning Mets loss at the Polo Grounds on July 19. Jay completed '62 with a won-lost record of 8-19.

In 1963, Hook pitched in 41 games and had a 5.48 earned run average. He had four wins for the season, two of which were complete games. On May 8, Jay struck out 10 batters as the Mets defeated the Phillies, 3-2, at the Polo Grounds. Against the Cubs on May 30, he pitched all nine innings for a 2-1 victory at home. Hook was the winning pitcher (in relief) in a 2-1 Mets victory in 10 innings over the Pirates in the second game of a doubleheader at home on June 2. He also got the win in a 3-2 Mets triumph at Cincinnati on September 8.

Jay appeared in three games for the Mets in 1964. He had a record of 0-1 before his trade to the Milwaukee Braves for Roy McMillan on May 8. Hook never appeared in a game for the Braves and did not play in the major leagues again.
