The Mets and Padres made a deal at the trade deadline in 2002. Pitchers Bobby M. Jones and Josh Reynolds as well as outfielder Jason Bay went to San Diego in exchange for pitchers Steve Reed and Jason Middlebrook. Jones had a 4.66 earned run average in 23 games pitched over two seasons as a Met. Bay and Reynolds were minor league prospects. Reed was a ten-year major league who had pitched for five different teams. Middlebrook appeared in 16 games for the Padres over two seasons.

Reed made 24 relief appearances for the Mets over the rest of the '02 season. He had a 2.08 ERA and lost his only decision as a Met. Steve joined the Colorado Rockies as a free agent in 2003. Middlebrook pitched 23 innings over eight games for the Mets in '02 and '03. He had a 1-0 won-lost record with a 5.87 ERA. Jason signed with the Angels in 2004.

Jones pitched in four games for the Padres in the '02 season. He had a 6.52 ERA without a win or a save. Bobby was released by the San Diego team in September. Bay appeared in three games for the Padres to start his career in '03 and was traded to the Pirates. Reynolds never reached the major leagues.
