The Mets and Orioles got together for a trade during Spring Training in 1997. Pitcher Hector Ramirez was dealt to Baltimore for infielders Scott McClain and Manny Alexander. Ramirez had spent eight seasons in the Mets' minor league system. McClain was in the Baltimore system for the previous seven seasons. Alexander played in 148 games for the Orioles in 1995 and 1996.
In 1997, Alexander hit .248 in 54 games as a Met. He stole 11 bases and scored 26 runs with the team. Manny was traded to the Cubs in August of '97. McClain spent the '97 season with the Mets' AAA-level team in Norfolk, Virginia. He batted .280 and hit 21 home runs in 127 games for the Tides. Scott joined the Tampa Bay Devil Rays as a free agent in 1998.
Ramirez played the '97 season in the Orioles' minor league system. He was dealt to the Florida Marlins in February of 1998.
