Heath Bell was a pitcher for the Mets from 2004 to 2006. He made 81 relief appearances for the team. Bell had one win and 105 strikeouts as a Met.
Bell joined the Mets from their AAA-level team in Norfolk in ’04. In his major league debut on August 24, he struck out three batters in two scoreless innings in a 3-1 Mets loss to the Padres at Shea Stadium. Heath had a pair of strikeouts in a scoreless inning in the Mets’ 9-4 win over the Braves at Shea on September 16. He also had one and two-thirds scoreless innings pitched in the Mets’ 4-3 victory over the Cubs in 11 innings on September 25 at Shea.
In 2005, Bell had 46 and two-thirds innings pitched. At Philadelphia on April 19, he pitched a perfect ninth inning to finish off the Mets’ 16-4 win over the Phillies. Heath chalked up five strikeouts in two scoreless innings in a 12-4 Mets triumph at Florida on May 26. He pitched one and one-third scoreless innings in the Mets’ 8-3 win over the Phillies on June 28 at Shea. Bell pitched two scoreless innings and got the win in a 3-2 Mets victory in 11 innings at Washington on July 7. He hurled a perfect eighth inning in the Mets’ 12-0 win over the Padres on July 21 at Shea. Heath also recorded two strikeouts in a perfect ninth inning in a 14-1 Mets victory at Arizona on August 23.
Bell pitched in 22 games for the Mets in ’06. He compiled 37 innings in the team’s division-winning season. At Florida on May 28, Heath pitched two and two-thirds innings of scoreless ball in the Mets’ 7-3 win over the Marlins. He pitched a scoreless seventh inning in a 6-2 Mets victory over the Reds on June 22 at Shea. Bell also struck out two batters in a scoreless eighth inning in the Mets’ 13-7 triumph at Chicago on July 16.
Following the ’06 season, Bell was traded to the Padres. He became a 3-time National League All-Star and 2-time winner of the NL Rolaids Relief Man of the Year Award with the San Diego team. In 2009, Heath led the NL in saves with 42.
