Harvey Haddix was on the Mets' coaching staff in 1966 and 1967. He was the first major league pitching coach in the careers of Tom Seaver and Nolan Ryan.

Haddix pitched in the major leagues with the St. Louis Cardinals, Philadelphia Phillies, Cincinnati Reds, Pittsburgh Pirates and Baltimore Orioles. He had a won-lost record of 136-113 with an earned run average of 3.63 over 14 seasons.

Harvey led the National League with 6 shutouts as a Cardinal in 1953. However, he is best known for a game with the Pirates on May 26, 1959. On that date, Haddix pitched 12 perfect innings against the Braves in Milwaukee before suffering the loss in the 13th. Despite the unfortunate outcome for Harvey, this game is considered by many to be the greatest pitching performance ever in a major league game.

In 1960, Haddix was the winning pitcher for the Pirates in Game 7 of the World Series against the Yankees.
