Gus Bell
From The Met Wiki
Gus Bell was an outfielder for the Mets in 1962. He played in 30 games for the team in its inaugural season. Bell had 20 total bases as a Met.
Immediately after playing in the World Series with the Reds, Bell was taken by the Mets in the expansion draft on October 10, 1961. He was the starting right fielder in the Mets' first game ever on April 11, 1962. In the second inning of the game, Gus singled off the Cardinals' Larry Jackson for the Mets' first hit. At the Polo Grounds on April 17, he hit a game-tying home run in the ninth inning before the Mets were defeated by the Colt .45, 5-2, in the 11th. Bell had a sacrifice fly and a ninth-inning double in a 2-1 Mets defeat at Philadelphia on May 5. He also had a game-tying single with two outs in the ninth inning of the Mets' eventual 6-5 win over the Cubs in 13 innings at the Polo Grounds on May 15.
On May 21, 1962, Bell was sent to the Milwaukee Braves to complete a trade for Frank Thomas that was made the previous November. He batted .285 for the Milwaukee team for the rest of the '62 season. Gus made six pinch-hitting appearances with the Braves over the next two years to conclude his career.
