George Stone

George Stone was a pitcher for the Mets from 1973 to 1975. He appeared in 55 games and had a won-lost record of 17-13. Stone pitched 282 innings and posted a 3.86 earned run average as a Met.
The Mets acquired Stone and Felix Millan from the Braves for Gary Gentry and Danny Frisella on November 1, 1972. In his first year in New York, George won his last eight decisions to end the season with an .800 winning percentage. Stone recorded two complete game wins (5-4 at Pittsburgh on June 22 and 11-3 vs Expos at Shea Stadium on July 28) in the Mets' pennant-winning season. He also pitched six shutout innings of relief in a 19-inning win over the Dodgers on May 24.
In the National League Championship Series, Stone was the Mets' starter in Game 4 against the Reds. George pitched six shutout innings in the game before leaving with the game tied in the seventh. The Mets came out with a 2-1 loss, but won the following day to claim the pennant. In the World Series, Stone got a save in Game 2 and also pitched two innings in the Mets' Game 7 loss to the Athletics.
Due to injuries, Stone was limited to 15 games in 1974. He recorded only two wins with a 5.03 ERA for the season. At St. Louis on May 16, George was the winning pitcher in the Mets' 6-4 triumph over the Cardinals. He also pitched a complete game and had a pair of two-run singles to lead the Mets to a 10-5 victory over the Cubs on May 21 at Shea.
Stone began the 1975 season on the disabled list. In his first game of the season on June 13, he pitched seven innings of two-hit ball and recorded the win in a 7-2 Mets triumph at San Diego. On June 30, George pitched a complete game for a 5-1 win over the Cubs at Shea. He got his last major league win in a 4-2 Mets victory at Pittsburgh on August 1.
On February 24, 1976, Stone was traded to the Texas Rangers for pitcher Bill Hands. George did not appear in any games for the Rangers and did not play in the major leagues again.
