George Altman

George Altman was an outfielder for the Mets in 1964. He played in 124 games and batted .230 with 9 home runs and 47 runs batted in. Altman scored 48 runs as a Met.
Altman came to the Mets with Bill Wakefield from the Cardinals in a trade for Roger Craig on November 4, 1963. In his first game with the team, George was the Mets' starting right fielder in the first game ever at Shea Stadium on April 17. In the first night game at Shea on May 6, he homered as the Mets lost to the Reds, 12-4. George hit a three-run homer to put the Mets ahead to stay in a 4-2 win over the Giants at San Francisco on May 18. He also doubled and scored the winning run in the ninth inning for a 1-0 Mets victory over the Reds in the first game of a doubleheader on July 12 at Shea.
On Old Timers Day at Shea on July 25, Altman drove in three runs with a single and a homer in the Mets' 10-0 win over the Milwaukee Braves. On August 16, he hit his only triple of the year as the Mets defeated the Phillies, 12-4. George had two doubles, a home run and three RBIs in the Mets' 4-0 win at San Francisco on September 16. He also hit the first of five Met homers in the team's 15-5 win at St. Louis on October 3.
On January 15, 1965, Altman was traded to the Chicago Cubs for outfielder Billy Cowan. He played three seasons in his second stint with the Cubs to end his major league career. George went on to a career as a player and coach in Japan.
