The Mets and Rangers made a deal of outfielders in December of 1975. The team traded Gene Clines to Texas in exchange for Joe Lovitto. Clines hit .227 in 82 games played in the '75 season. The switch-hitting Lovitto had a .216 batting average in 306 games over four years with the Rangers.
Lovitto never appeared in a regular season game for the Mets. He was released during Spring Training in 1976 and his career came to an end. In the '76 season, Clines batted .276 in 116 games for the Texas team. He was traded to the Cubs the following winter.
