Elliott Maddox was a third baseman and outfielder for the Mets from 1978 to 1980. He hit .255 with 7 home runs and 85 runs batted in during his three years with the team. Maddox played in 335 games as a Met.
After eight years in the American League, Maddox signed with the Mets as a free agent on November 30, 1977. In his first National League season, he had 100 hits, 43 runs scored a team-leading 71 walks in 1978. On May 10, Elliott had a single, a double and three RBIs in the Mets' 7-2 win over the Expos at Montreal. He singled four times in the Mets' 10-3 win on August 9, also in Montreal. In a 5-4 Mets loss to the Dodgers at Shea Stadium on August 20, Maddox had three singles and a double. He drove in the winning run with a single in the eighth inning in the Mets' 11-9 victory over the Pirates on September 10 at Shea. Elliott also had an RBI single and a run scored in a 2-0 Mets win on September 17 at Philadelphia.
In 1979, Maddox appeared in 86 games in a part-time role for the Mets. He batted .268 and 12 RBIs on the season. In the Mets' 4-3 win in 10 innings over the Dodgers at Shea on July 11, Elliott had three singles, one of which drove in the tying run in the fifth. On September 24, he hit his only home run of the year in a 3-1 Mets win at Chicago. Five days later, Maddox had three doubles in the Mets' 8-7 win over the Cardinals at St. Louis.
Elliott became the Mets' regular third baseman in 1980. In 130 games played, he collected 101 hits for 131 total bases while leading the National League with 6 hit-by-pitches. Maddox singled home the winning run in the 10th inning for a 5-4 Mets victory over the Braves at Shea on May 24. In the first game of a doubleheader at Chicago on June 25, he had a single, two doubles and two RBIs in the Mets' 9-1 win over the Cubs. Elliott drove in three runs with a single and a double in the Mets' 6-0 win at Atlanta on July 17. He had a ninth-inning RBI single to give the Mets a 3-2 win at St. Louis on August 8. Maddox also drove in two runs with an 11th-inning single in the Mets' 9-6 win on September 20 at Pittsburgh.
Maddox got a single against the Pirates in his final major league game on October 1, 1980. In 1981, he signed with the Phillies and played 58 games for AAA-level Oklahoma City 89ers to conclude his career.
