Ed Lynch was a pitcher for the Mets from 1980 to 1986. He appeared in a total of 167 games as both a starter and a reliever. Lynch had 38 wins and a 3.82 earned run average with the Mets.

Lynch pitched 19 and one-third innings to begin his career in 1980. He started four of the five games in which he pitched and struck out nine batters. Ed chalked up his first major league win on September 13 in the Mets' 4-2 triumph over the Cubs at Shea Stadium.

Ed had a 2.91 ERA in 17 games pitched in 1981. He recorded four victories during the strike-shortened season. On May 7, Ed got his only win of the season's first half as the Mets defeated the Giants, 3-2, at Shea. He pitched a combined shutout with Neil Allen for a 4-0 Mets win at Atlanta on August 18. Ed also recorded wins at Pittsburgh on September 8 and against the Cardinals on September 18 at Shea.

In 1982, Lynch started 12 games and relieved 31 times in his first full major league season. On May 3, he pitched two innings of scoreless relief to pick up the win as the Mets defeated the Dodgers in 12 innings, 6-3, at Los Angeles. Twice during the year (August 15 and September 23), he got credit for the win in a 5-4 Mets triumph over the Cubs. Ed also recorded the win in the Mets' 10-2 victory over the Reds at Shea on September 5.

Lynch made 27 starts for the Mets in 1983. He pitched 174 and two-thirds innings and recorded 10 wins for the year. Ed hit a two-run single and was the winning pitcher in an 11-4 Mets victory at Pittsburgh on May 16. On May 29, he singled to start a three-run sixth inning and got the win as the Mets defeated the Padres, 3-2, at San Diego. In the first game of a doubleheader at St. Louis on June 28, Lynch pitched eight innings to earn the victory in the Mets' 10-1 win. He also pitched his first career complete game and had a run-scoring single in a 7-2 Mets triumph at San Francisco on August 20.

Ed had a won-lost record of 9-8 in 1984. Working mostly in relief, he had 124 innings pitched with 62 strikeouts. At Shea on April 18, Lynch pitched two scoreless innings and came out with a win as the Mets defeated the Expos, 5-4. He was again victorious ten days later in the Mets' 4-3 win over the Phillies at Shea. Ed pitched four scoreless innings and got the win in a 4-3 Mets triumph over the Cubs at Shea on May 2. He also got credit for the win against the Phils on September 25 at Shea in the Mets' 6-4 triumph that clinched second place in the National League East Division.

In 1985, Lynch returned to the Mets' starting rotation. He had a 3.44 ERA and won 10 games. Ed pitched a complete game shutout with a 4-0 blanking of the Braves on May 8 at Shea. On June 18, He pitched all nine innings for the win as the Mets defeated the Cubs, 5-1, at Shea. Lynch began a streak of wins in six straight games pitched with a complete game, 6-2 victory against the Pirates at Shea on July 3. During this period, he allowed 12 runs in 45 and two-thirds innings for a 2.36 ERA.

Ed's only appearance for the Mets in 1986 came in the team's 9-8 loss in 14 innings at Philadelphia on April 12. The next day, he was placed on the disabled list with an injured left knee. Lynch was traded to the Cubs for Dave Liddell on June 30, 1986. He ended his career with the Cubs in 1987.
