Don Zimmer

Don Zimmer played for the Mets in their inaugural 1962 season. Zimmer was the Mets' starting third baseman in their first game on April 11. He appeared in a total of 14 games as a Met, getting 4 hits in 52 at-bats for an .077 batting average. Don was traded to the Cincinnati Reds for Cliff Cook and Bob G. Miller on May 7.
Before joining the Mets, Zimmer played a total of eight major league seasons with the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago Cubs. Don was a member of the Dodgers' world championship teams in Brooklyn in 1955 and Los Angeles in 1959. He appeared in five World Series games with the Dodgers.
After finishing the '62 season with the Reds, Zimmer split the 1963 season between the Dodgers and Washington Senators. He then played his last two major league seasons with the Senators in 1964 and 1965. Don concluded his career as a professional player in Japan with the Toei Flyers in 1966.
Following his playing days, Zimmer went on to a lifelong career in baseball. He served on many major league coaching staffs. Don also was a manager for the Padres, Red Sox, Rangers and Cubs for a total of 13 seasons. In 1989, he led the Cubs to the National League East Division title.
