Shaw was drafted by the Mets in 1965. He made his major league debut with an inning of relief in the 1967 season opener against the Pirates at Shea Stadium. On April 20, Don got his first career save in the Mets' 6-1 win over the Cubs. At Shea on May 2, he chalked up his first major league win in the Mets' 3-2 triumph over the Giants in 12 innings. Don also recorded a victory with five innings of shutout relief as the Mets defeated the Astros, 5-1, in Houston on August 1.
Although he spent most of the season at AAA-level Jacksonville, Shaw pitched in 7 games for the Mets in 1968. He struck out 11 batters in 12 innings pitched and allowed only one earned run (a homer by the Giants' Jack Hiatt on June 16) for the year.
Don was selected by the Montreal Expos in the expansion draft on October 14, 1968. After spending the 1969 season with the Expos, he joined the St. Louis Cardinals. Shaw appeared in 3 games for the Oakland Athletics to end his career in 1972.
