Howard Rodney "Doc" Edwards was a coach for the Mets in 1990 and 1991. He served under three managers in his two seasons with the team. Edwards was bench coach for Davey Johnson, Bud Harrelson and Mike Cubbage.

As a major league catcher, Edwards played in 317 games between 1962 and 1970. He collected 216 hits for the Indians, Athletics, Yankees and Phillies. After coaching three seasons on the Phils' staff, Doc was a minor league manager continuously from 1973 to 1985. He served as a coach for the Indians in 1986 and managed the Tribe over the next three years.

After leaving the Mets, Edwards later spent two seasons as the skipper for the Pirates' AAA-level team in Buffalo. He then went on to a lengthy managerial career in independent leagues.
