Dick Selma was a pitcher for the Mets from 1965 to 1968. He pitched 359 innings in 105 games for the team. Selma had 17 wins and 253 strikeouts as a Met.
In '65, Selma started his career with a pinch-running appearance on September 2. The next day, he made his major league pitching debut at St. Louis. In the game, Dick got his first career win as the Mets defeated the Cardinals, 6-3. He pitched a 10-inning complete game and struck out 13 batters for a 1-0 Mets win over the Braves at Shea Stadium on September 12. Selma also recorded 10 strikeouts in seven innings in a 4-2 Mets loss to the Pirates on September 25 at Shea.
Selma made seven starts and 23 relief appearances in 1966. He pitched a total of 80 and two-thirds innings and won four games during the season. At Pittsburgh on April 29, Dick struck out two batters in a scoreless 10th inning and got the win as the Mets went on to defeat the Pirates, 5-2, in the 11th. He pitched the last four and two-thirds innings to earn the win in the Mets' 7-4 victory over the Astros on May 10 at Shea. Selma was the winning pitcher in a 7-5 Mets triumph at San Francisco on May 20. He hit the first triple of his career on September 5 against the Reds at Shea. At Cincinnati on September 25, Dick pitched the last five innings to get the win as the Mets defeated the Reds, 8-4, clinching the team's first ever non-last-place finish for a season.
In 1967, Selma had a 2.77 earned run average. He recorded two wins and two saves for the year. At Shea on June 27, Dick pitched five and two-thirds innings of scoreless ball for the win in the Mets' 5-2 victory over the Pirates. He earned a save with two and one-third innings of scoreless relief in a 5-3 Mets win at Philadelphia on August 16. In the second game of a doubleheader on September 2, Selma struck out five batters in five shutout innings to get the win in a 5-4 Mets triumph at Chicago. He also hurled three scoreless innings for a save, preserving Les Rohr's first major league win for a 6-3 Mets victory over the Dodgers on September 19 at Shea.
Selma became a member of the Mets' starting rotation in 1968. He took the mound to begin 23 games for the team and made 10 relief appearances. Dick had 117 strikeouts in '68 and won his first six decisions of the season. At Chicago on May 12, Selma pitched his first major league shutout and hit three singles for a 10-0 Mets victory over the Cubs in the second game of a doubleheader. Dick pitched a five-hitter for another shutout and a 3-0 Mets win at Los Angeles on June 11. He combined with Cal Koonce for a 1-0 win over the Cubs in the first game of a doubleheader on July 11 at Shea. Selma also pitched a complete game shutout for a 4-0 Mets victory at St. Louis on August 27.
Following the '68 season, Selma was selected by the San Diego Padres in the National League expansion draft. He split the 1969 season between the Padres and Cubs. Dick pitched for the Phillies from 1970 to 1973. He ended his career with the Angels and Brewers in 1974.
