Deron Johnson

Deron Johnson was a coach for the Mets in 1981. He served under Joe Torre in the strike-shortened season.

Johnson played in the major leagues for 16 seasons. He had 245 home runs among hit 1,447 career hits. As a member of the Cincinnati Reds in 1965, Deron led the National League in runs batted in with 130. He also appeared in the 1973 World Series with the Oakland Athletics against the Mets.

After serving as the hitting instructor for the Angels for two years, Johnson joined the Mets' coaching staff. He coached with the Phillies for three seasons after being let go after the '81 season. Deron was a coach for the Mariners, White Sox and Angels between 1985 and 1992. He died on April 23, 1992, at the age of 53.
