The Mets traded outfielder Del Unser and long-time third baseman Wayne Garrett to the Expos for outfielders Jim Dwyer and Pepe Mangual. The deal was unique in that each pair of players had worn uniform numbers 11 (Garrett and Mangual) and 25 (Unser and Dwyer) with their teams. Naturally, all four players took the same numbers with their new teams.
The trade had an immediate impact. Two days after it was made, Unser homered for Montreal in the bottom of the 11th inning to defeat the Mets. Del stayed with the Expos through the end of the 1978 season. He then concluded his career with four years in Philadelphia, where he became a World Series winner with the Phillies in 1980. Like Unser, Garrett played in Montreal through '78. Wayne then played the 1979 season with the St. Louis Cardinals.
The Mets got basically no production on their end of the trade. Dwyer appeared in only 11 games and batted .154 for the team. He left the Mets after the 1976 season and played 13 more years in the major leagues. In 1983, Jim was a member of the World Champion Baltimore Orioles. Mangual appeared in 49 games and batted .183 over two seasons with the Mets to conclude his major league career.
