Del Unser played for the New York Mets in the 1975 and 1976 seasons. Del compiled a .271 batting average with 15 home runs and 78 RBIs in 224 games with the team.

Before joining the Mets, Unser was in the major leagues for seven years. He played for the Washington Senators (1968-71), Cleveland Indians (1972) and Philadelphia Phillies (1973-74). Del was traded to the Mets from the Phillies with Mac Scarce and John Stearns for Don Hahn, Dave Schneck and Tug McGraw on December 3, 1974.

In '75, Unser led the Mets with a .294 batting average. He accumulated 208 total bases for the season. At Shea Stadium on April 22, Del had three singles, two RBIs and a pair of runs scored in the Mets' 9-5 win over the Cardinals. He homered in a Memorial Day 6-3 Mets victory over the Dodgers on May 26 at Shea. Del hit a two-run double to put the Mets ahead to stay in a 7-2 triumph at San Diego on June 13. He singled four times and drove in three runs in an 11-6 Mets win in the second game of a doubleheader at St. Louis on July 29. Unser hit a three-run double in a 9-6 Mets victory over the Expos on August 6 at Shea. He also walked with the bases loaded in the 18th inning to give the Mets a 4-3 win over the Expos at Shea on September 16.

Unser played in 77 games with the Mets in '76. He had 63 hits and 28 runs scored for the team during the year. At St. Louis on April 19, Del hit a home run in the 17th inning to give the Mets a 4-3 win over the Cardinals. He had a run-scoring single and a two-run homer in a 7-4 Mets victory over the Astros in the second game of a doubleheader on May 2 at Shea. Unser had a two-run single to put the Mets ahead to stay for a 4-1 victory at Montreal on May 22. He also had two singles, a double and three runs scored in a 13-3 Mets win at Chicago on June 27.

Unser was traded to the Montreal Expos with Wayne Garrett for Pepe Mangual and Jim Dwyer on July 21, 1976. Two days later, he hit a home run in the bottom of the 11th inning to give his new team a 3-2 win over the Mets at Jarry Park. Del played two more seasons in Montreal before returning to Philadelphia, where he became a member of the Phillies' 1980 World Championship team. He finished his career with the Phils in 1982.
