The Mets got together with the Athletics on a trade in December of 2001. Just one week after being acquired from the Yankees, David Justice was sent to Oakland in exchange for pitchers Mark Guthrie and Tyler Yates. Justice was a 12-year major league veteran who had played in nine post-seasons. Guthrie had pitched 13 major league seasons and appeared in the post-season four times. Yates split the '01 season between the AA and AAA levels.

Guthrie pitched in 68 games for the Mets in 2002. He had a 5-3 won-lost record with a 2.44 earned run average. Mark joined the Cubs as a free agent in 2003. Yates spent two more seasons in the minor leagues before appearing in 21 games for the Mets in 2004. Tyler won two games in his only season in New York.

Justice had a .266 batting average in 118 games with the Athletics in 2002. It was the final season of his major league career.
