Dan Wheeler

Dan Wheeler was a pitcher for the Mets in 2003 and 2004. He appeared in 67 games with the team. Wheeler had four wins, two saves and 81 strikeouts as a Met.
Wheeler had pitched three seasons with the Devil Rays before joining the Mets as a free agent. In ’03, he had 51 innings pitched for the season. In his Mets debut on June 18, Dan pitched three perfect innings to record a save in the team’s 10-5 win at Florida. He struck out the Phils’ Pat Burrell with two runners on base in the bottom of the ninth for a save in a 7-5 Mets victory on July 22 at Philadelphia. Wheeler also had a scoreless inning pitched and got the win in the Mets’ 3-2 triumph over the Braves at Shea Stadium on September 1.
In ’04, Wheeler made 31 relief appearances and one start for the Mets. As a starter, he pitched four innings and got a no-decision in the Mets’ 10-8 defeat at Atlanta on April 8. Dan pitched a perfect 11th inning for the win in a 6-5 Mets victory over the Brewers on May 9 at Shea. He recorded three strikeouts in scoreless 12th and 13th innings for the win in the Mets’ 3-2 triumph at Houston on May 16. Wheeler also had one and two-thirds scoreless innings pitched for the win in a 6-3 Mets victory at Florida on July 9.
On August 27, 2004, Wheeler was traded to the Astros. He pitched for the Houston team during its National League Championship season of 2005. Dan returned to Tampa Bay in 2007 and became part of the Rays’ American League pennant winning team the following year. In 2011, he joined the Boston Red Sox.
