Claudell Washington was an outfielder for the Mets in 1980. He batted .275 in 79 games with the team. Washington had 10 home runs and 42 runs batted in as a Met.
During the '80 season, Washington was acquired by the Mets in a trade with the Chicago White Sox. He appeared in the team's starting lineup 68 times over the rest of the season. At Shea Stadium on June 14, Claudell drove in two runs with a sacrifice fly and a single in the Mets' 7-6 win over the Giants. He hit three home runs in a 9-6 Mets victory at Los Angeles on June 22. Washington hit a three-run homer to put the Mets ahead to stay for a 6-5 win on June 24 at Chicago. He singled four times in a 9-5 Mets victory over the Expos in the first game of a doubleheader at Shea on July 4. Claudell had two singles, a double and a run scored in the Mets' 3-1 win at Pittsburgh on August 12. He homered twice in the Mets' 8-6 loss to the Padres in 18 innings on August 26 at Shea. Washington also had two singles, a homer, a stolen base and three runs scored in a 10-5 Mets defeat to the Pirates at Shea on October 1.
In November of '80, Washington signed with the Braves as a free agent. He played six seasons with the Atlanta team. Claudell also spent time with the Yankees and Angels before the end of his career in 1990.
