The news of Tom Seaver's 100th career win was overshadowed by another event. Earlier in the day, the Mets had dealt pitcher Charlie Williams to the Giants for the legendary Willie Mays. The arrival of "Say Hey Willie" was welcomed joyously by Met fans.
In his first game as a Met, Mays hit a game-winning home run against his former San Francisco team. He homered 13 more times as a Met before ending his career in 1973. Williams went on to pitch 237 games for the Giants, winning 18 and losing 16 over seven seasons.
