Charlie Puleo was a pitcher for the Mets in 1981 and 1982. He pitched in 40 games with the team. Puleo recorded nine wins and 106 strikeouts as a Met.
Puleo came to the Mets in a trade with the Toronto Blue Jays on April 6, 1981. He spent the '81 season at AAA-level Tidewater (Norfolk, Virginia) before joining the Mets in September. In the second game of a doubleheader at Shea Stadium on September 16, Charlie made his major league debut with two and one-third scoreless innings as the Mets defeated the Phillies, 5-4. He struck out six batters in eight innings in his first major league start on September 30 at Shea. However, he got a no-decision in the Mets' 2-1 victory over the Cubs.
In 1982, Puleo led all Mets pitchers with 24 games started. He tied with Pete Falcone for the team lead in innings pitched with 171 during the year. Charlie pitched two scoreless innings of relief and got his first major league win in a 2-1 Mets triumph over the Expos at Shea on April 17. He pitched a four-hit shutout for a 6-0 Mets win over the Padres on May 11 at Shea. Puleo had eight and one-third innings pitched to earn the win in the Mets' 3-1 victory over the Expos at Shea on June 24. He was the winning pitcher in a 9-4 Mets triumph over the Pirates on July 31 at Shea. Charlie also pitched three shutout innings in relief to get the win in the Mets' 6-4 victory over the Phillies at Shea on September 26.
Puleo was sent to the Cincinnati Reds in a trade that brought Tom Seaver back to the Mets on December 16, 1982. He had seven wins in 32 games over two seasons with the Reds. Charlie also pitched for the Atlanta Braves from 1986 to 1989.
