Charley Smith

Charley Smith was an infielder for the Mets in 1964 and 1965. He batted .242 in 262 games played as a member of the team. Smith had 36 home runs and 120 runs batted in as a Met.

Smith joined the Mets from the Chicago White Sox in a trade for Chico Fernandez on April 23, 1964. Despite his arrival after the season began, Charley led the Mets with 20 homers in '64. His first homer as a Met led off a game against the Braves at Milwaukee on May 4. He hit a two-run double to put the Mets ahead to stay in a 4-2 victory at San Francisco on May 15. In the Mets' 19-1 win at Chicago on May 26, Smith had a homer, two singles and led all players in the game with five RBIs. Five days later, he was one of four players to get four hits in a 23-inning game against the Giants at Shea Stadium. On August 17, Charley had two homers and four RBIs in a 5-0 Mets win over the Pirates at Shea. He hit a three-run homer in the Mets' 7-0 victory over the Cubs at Shea on August 21. Smith also singled home the winning run in the ninth inning to give the Mets a 5-4 win over the Cubs in the second game of a doubleheader at Shea on August 23.

In 1965, Smith led the Mets with 62 RBIs and 196 total bases. He also had a team-leading .393 slugging percentage. On April 23, Charley hit a game-winning sacrifice fly to cap an amazing comeback for a 9-8 Mets win at San Francisco. He hit a home run to put the Mets ahead to stay in a 5-3 win over the Reds at Shea on May 14. Smith was one of four Mets to homer off Bob Gibson in the team's 8-5 loss at St. Louis on July 16. At Philadelphia on July 31, he hit a three-run homer in the first inning of a game won by the Mets, 4-3, in 11 innings. On September 12, Charley's run-scoring single in the ninth inning gave the Mets a 1-0 win over the Braves at Shea.

Smith and Al Jackson were traded to the Cardinals for Ken Boyer on October 20, 1965. After playing for the St. Louis team in 1966, Charley spent the next two seasons with the Yankees. He finished his career with the Cubs in April of 1969.
