Carlos Baerga was an infielder for the Mets from 1996 to 1998. He had 283 hits in 306 games with the team. Baerga scored 104 runs as a Met.
Baerga was acquired by the Mets in a trade with the Cleveland Indians on July 29, 1996. He played in 26 games over the remainder of the ’96 season. In his first game with the Mets, Carlos got a game-winning single in the eighth inning for a 5-4 victory over the Pirates in the opener of a doubleheader at Shea Stadium on July 30. He had a single, double and three runs batted in as the Mets defeated the Cubs, 8-5, on August 14 at Shea. Baerga also had a run-scoring double in a 7-3 Mets win over the Padres in Monterrey, Mexico on August 17.
In 1997, Baerga had a .281 batting average and 185 total bases. He hit nine homers and 52 runs batted in during the season. At Shea on May 3, Carlos had two singles, two doubles and a pair of runs scored in a 5-1 Mets win over the Cardinals. He singled four times and drove in four runs in a 10-3 Mets victory over the Phillies on May 31 at Shea. Baerga hit a two-run homer and a game-winning single in the Mets’ 6-5 triumph over the Braves at Shea on June 24. He had two singles, a double, a homer and four RBIs in a 12-4 Mets win over the Rockies on August 7 at Shea. Carlos walked with the bases loaded in the 11th inning to give the Mets a 9-8 victory over the Padres at Shea on August 22. He also had a three-run homer in the first inning of the Mets’ 10-3 win at Florida on September 22.
Baerga played in 147 games in 1998. He collected 136 hits and scored 46 runs on the year. Carlos had a single, a double and two RBIs in the Mets’ 9-2 win over the Cardinals at Shea on May 8. He drove in three runs with a sacrifice fly, a single and a homer in a 6-1 Mets victory over the Reds on May 21 at Shea. Baerga drove in the winning run with a single in the ninth inning for a 3-2 Mets triumph over the Orioles at Shea on June 25. At Chicago on July 24, he had two singles, a double and four RBIs in a 7-3 Mets win over the Cubs in the second game of a doubleheader. Carlos singled four times in a 5-4 Mets loss in 14 innings at St. Louis on August 12. In a doubleheader opener at Houston on September 15, he had a double, homer and a pair of RBIs in the Mets’ 6-5 defeat to the Astros in 12 innings.
In 1999, Baerga appeared in 55 games with the Padres and Indians. After two seasons out of the major leagues, he played for the Red Sox in 2002. Carlos then spent two seasons with the Diamondbacks before ending his career with the Washington Nationals in 2005.
