Bret Saberhagen was a pitcher for the Mets from 1992 to 1995. He had 29 wins and a 3.16 earned run average as a member of the team. Saberhagen pitched in 76 games with the Mets.

Saberhagen came to the Mets after eight seasons with the Kansas City Royals. With the Kansas City team, he won two Cy Young Awards and was named 1985 World Series Most Valuable Player. As a Met in '92, Bret struck out 81 batters and recorded three wins. Against the Astros on April 29, he pitched a three-hit shutout for a 1-0 Mets win at Shea Stadium. He recorded nine strikeouts in eight innings and got the win in a 5-1 Mets victory at Houston on May 4. Saberhagen was also the winning pitcher in the Mets' 4-1 triumph on May 15 at Los Angeles.

In 1993, Saberhagen pitched 139 and one-third innings over 19 games. He recorded seven wins and 93 strikeouts for the year. On April 7, Bret pitched eight innings of two-hit ball to earn the win in the Mets' 6-1 victory over the Rockies at Shea. He struck out eight batters in a three-hit shutout for a 1-0 Mets win over the Marlins at Shea on May 10. Saberhagen again struck out eight Marlins in a complete game for a 7-1 Mets win on June 30 at Florida. He also pitched eight innings of three-hit ball to get the win in a 4-3 Mets triumph at Montreal on August 2.

Bret led the Mets with 14 wins, 143 strikeouts and a 2.74 ERA in 1994. He was the Mets' lone representative at the All-Star Game at Pittsburgh during the season. At Houston on April 9, Saberhagen pitched a complete game five-hitter for an 8-2 Mets win over the Astros. He pitched another five-hitter and scored two runs on May 5 at St. Louis as the Mets defeated the Cardinals, 8-1. Bret struck out nine batters and was the winning pitcher in a 3-1 Mets victory at San Diego on June 30. He allowed only two hits in eight innings and struck out eight to earn the win in the Mets' 4-2 triumph on July 5 at San Francisco. Saberhagen also pitched a complete game for a 7-1 Mets win at St. Louis on July 25.

Saberhagen appeared in 16 games for the Mets in 1995. He had three complete games among his five wins on the year. At Shea on May 27, Bret pitched all nine innings for a 6-3 Mets win over the Giants. He struck out ten batters in eight innings to get a win as the Mets defeated the Marlins, 7-3, at Shea on June 13. Saberhagen had a complete game six-hitter for a 9-3 Mets win on June 23 at Atlanta. He also pitched all nine innings for the win in the Mets' 8-3 triumph at Florida on June 28.

On July 31, 1995, Saberhagen was traded with David Swanson to the Colorado Rockies for Juan Acevedo and Arnold Gooch. He appeared in 9 regular season games and Game 4 of the National League Division Series for the Rockies in '95. Bret then joined the Boston Red Sox, with whom he concluded his career in 2001.
