Bob Gibson was a Mets coaching staff member in 1981. He served as the team's pitching coach under former teammate Joe Torre. Gibson was relieved of his duties (as was Torre and other Met coaches) after the strike-shortened '81 season.

Gibson had an outstanding career as a major league pitcher. In 17 seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals, he recorded 251 wins and 3,117 strikeouts. Bob won two Cy Young Awards and two World Series Most Valuable Player Awards. He was also named National League MVP in 1968.

In '81, Gibson was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. His induction came during the players strike. In 1982, Bob began a three-year stint as the pitching coach for the Atlanta Braves.
