Billy Cowan was an outfielder for the Mets in the 1965 season. He played in 82 games and hit .179 with 3 home runs and 9 runs batted in. Cowan had 49 total bases as a Met.
The Mets acquired Cowan from the Cubs in a trade for George Altman on January 15, 1965. In the '65 season opener on April 12, Billy was the Mets' center fielder and leadoff hitter against the Dodgers at Shea Stadium. On June 21, he homered in the ninth inning to give the Mets a 1-0 win at Los Angeles. Billy's other two home runs came in consecutive games against the Milwaukee Braves on June 28 and June 29 at Shea. He also hit a two-run triple in the Mets' 8-1 victory over the Phillies in the first game of a doubleheader at Shea on July 25.
Cowan was dealt to the Braves on August 5, 1965 for two minor league players. He concluded the year as the leadoff batter for the Braves' in their last game as a Milwaukee franchise on October 3. Billy also played for the Phillies, Yankees and Angels before the end of his career in 1972.
