Bill Wakefield was a pitcher for the Mets in 1964. He compiled an earned run average of 3.61 and struck out 61 batters. Wakefield had a won-lost record of 3-5 for the Mets.
Wakefield and George Altman joined the Mets in a trade with the Cardinals for Roger Craig on November 4, 1963. In the '64 season, Bill led all Mets pitchers with 62 games. This was a team record that stood until Skip Lockwood appeared in 63 games in 1977.
On May 6, Wakefield was the Mets' starting pitcher against the Reds in the first night game ever at Shea Stadium. He recorded his first major league save in a 4-2 Mets win at San Francisco on May 15. Bill started against the Giants in the second game of a doubleheader at Shea on May 31, which ended with a Mets loss in 23 innings. Bill got his first major league win in the Mets' 7-4 triumph over the Houston Colt .45s at Shea on June 2.
Wakefield was the winning pitcher in the Mets' victories at Houston on July 1 and at Cincinnati on July 21. Against the Reds, he had six strikeouts while pitching five and one-third scoreless innings. Bill appeared in his final game as a Met on October 4 at St. Louis.
Wakefield pitched in the Mets' system in 1965 and 1966 to conclude his career.
