Barry Lyons was a catcher for the Mets from 1986 to 1990. He had 131 hits in 240 games played for the team. Lyons hit 9 homers and drove in 71 runs as a Met.
Lyons began his major league career with six games in the Mets' 1986 World Championship season. In his major league debut on April 19, he got his first major league RBI in the Mets' 3-2 win over the Phillies at Shea Stadium. Barry scored his only run of '86 on Tim Teufel's grand slam in the 11th inning that gave the Mets an 8-4 victory over the Phils at Shea on June 10.
In 1987, Lyons hit .254 in his first full major league season. He homered four times and had 24 RBIs during the year. As a pinch-hitter, Barry hit his first major league homer in a 7-4 Mets loss to the Cardinals on April 26 at Shea. On May 1, he homered in the Mets' 7-6 win at Shea over the Expos. Lyons hit a grand slam in a 7-4 Mets victory over the Giants at Shea on August 20. He also hit a three-run homer in the Mets' 12-4 win at Chicago on September 15.
Barry appeared in 50 games for the Mets in 1988. He had 21 hits for 30 total bases in the team's division-winning season. Lyons had a pinch-hit, two-run double in a 12-9 Mets victory at St. Louis on April 23. He hit a game-winning, two-run triple in the sixth inning for a 3-1 Mets triumph over the Cubs on August 2 at Shea. Barry also had a pair of RBI singles in a 10-4 Mets win at Philadelphia on September 26.
Lyons had a .247 batting average in 1989. He hit a home run in an 11-4 Mets victory at Cincinnati on May 10. At Chicago on June 7, he had a run-scoring single and a two-run double in the Mets' 10-5 win. Barry had a single and two doubles in the Mets' doubleheader-sweeping 6-4 victory over the Cardinals at Shea on August 10. He also scored the winning run in the ninth inning for a 3-2 Mets victory over the Padres on August 15 at Shea.
In 1990, Barry got 19 hits in 24 games with the Mets. In the season opener on April 9, he hit a two-run homer in a 12-3 Mets loss to the Pirates at Shea. He hit another two-run homer four days later at Montreal in a 4-1 Mets victory over the Expos in 10 innings. Lyons got two run-scoring singles in the Mets' 6-5 loss at San Francisco on May 15. This turned out to be Barry's last game as a Met as he went on the disabled list the following day and was later released by the team.
Lyons signed with the Dodgers before the end of the '90 season. In 1991, he spent time with both the Dodgers and the Angels. Barry remained in professional baseball over the next five years, during which he played 27 games for the White Sox in 1995.
