Johan Santana allowed only two hits over the first six innings. A home run by Chase Headley gave the Padres a 1-0 lead in the second. In the sixth, Scott Hairston led off with a double and was left stranded. Meanwhile, the Mets got three runs against San Diego starter Josh Banks. Dan Murphy and Nick Evans got singles that drove in Carlos Beltran and Fernando Tatis, respectively, in the fourth and Evans' sacrifice fly brought home Murphy in the bottom of the sixth.
In the eighth, the Padres loaded the bases with none out. Mets' reliever Pedro Feliciano got a force out at home before giving up a single to Adrian Gonzalez that scored Edgar Gonzalez. Joe Smith then came in and got Kevin Kouzmanoff to hit into an inning-ending double play.
The Padres tied the game on Jody Gerut's home run off Scott Schoeneweis with one out in the ninth. Aaron Heilman retired the next two batters and Endy Chavez led off the bottom half with a single off San Diego reliever Heath Bell. After two outs, Wright homered to win the game for the Mets. The crowd of 49,352 was treated to a thrilling finish.
