The Mets faced the Padres on a Monday night at Shea Stadium. The fans were treated to a brilliant pitching job by David Cone as he tossed a one-hit shutout against San Diego. The Mets won easily, 6-0.
Cone retired the Padres in order in the top of the first inning. In the bottom half, Gregg Jefferies doubled with one out and scored on a single by Darryl Strawberry off San Diego starter Eric Show. The Mets got two more runs in the third on Jefferies' leadoff homer and Gary Carter's single to score Strawberry for a 3-0 lead.
Roberto Alomar grounded out to start the top of the fourth for the Padres. Tony Gwynn followed with a double to right field. Gwynn was left stranded as Cone struck out Keith Moreland and got John Kruk to fly out, ending the inning. David then retired San Diego in order in the fifth.
In the bottom of the fifth, Keith Hernandez hit a solo home run off Show. The Mets then scored twice against reliever Dave Leiper in the sixth on Mookie Wilson's single that brought home Lee Mazzilli and a triple by Jefferies on which Wilson crossed the plate. Cone followed up by setting down the Padres 1-2-3 in the seventh and eighth innings.
David completed his one-hitter with three consecutive fly ball outs in the ninth. The Mets had their National League-leading 77th victory of the year. For Cone, it was his 14th win and third shutout of the season.
