The Mets played the Phillies on a Wednesday night in Philadelphia. The teams played a two-hour and 46-minute game to close out a three-game series. In ten innings, the Mets came out with a 3-2 defeat to the Phils for their 100th loss of the season.

After two scoreless innings, Jim Hickman singled off Philadelphia starter Cal McLish to begin the top of the third. A ground out by Elio Chacon moved Hickman to second base. Jay Hook followed with a bunt single on which second baseman Tony Taylor made an error that allowed Hickman to score. Richie Ashburn fouled out to third baseman Billy Klaus and a fielder's choice grounder by Rod Kanehl ended the inning. Mets' starter Hook then shut down the Phillies in the bottom half.

McLish limited the Mets to a single by Charlie Neal in a scoreless top of the fourth. With two outs in the bottom of the inning, third baseman Neal made an error that allowed Don Demeter to reach first base. Frank Torre was hit by a pitch and Clay Dalrymple walked to load the bases. An ensuing single by Bobby Wine scored Demeter and Torre for a 2-1 Phils lead. Hook then fanned McLish for the third out.

Both McLish and Hook retired the side in order in the fifth inning. In the top of the sixth, Ashburn singled and Kanehl hit a line drive to Taylor for a double play. Gene Woodling followed with a home run to tie the game and Marv Throneberry singled to right field. Neal hit a grounder to Klaus for an inning-ending force play. Hook then retired three straight Philadelphia batters after a leadoff double by Wes Covington in the bottom half.

McLish retired the Mets 1-2-3 in the seventh and eighth innings. The Phils were held to singles by Taylor and Demeter in scoreless bottom halves. Woodling opened the top of the ninth with a single and Throneberry flied out to right fielder Johnny Callison. Neal hit a liner to Taylor on which Woodling was doubled up at first base. The Phillies had runners on first and second with two outs in the bottom of the inning. Hook then struck out Callison to send the game onward.

The Mets were set down in order by McLish in the top of the 10th inning. Covington started the bottom half with a double off Hook. An ensuing single by Demeter scored pinch-runner Ted Savage to end the game. The Mets reached the 100-loss mark in the 134th game of their inaugural season.
