The Mets and Giants began a three-game series on a Friday night at Shea Stadium. It was a pitchers' duel between Jerry Koosman and San Francisco's Juan Marichal as the teams were held scoreless for the first nine innings. The Mets came out with a 1-0 win in the bottom of the tenth.
The Giants had a scoring chance in the fourth inning. Bobby Bonds led off with a single, but was caught off first base by Koosman's pickoff throw. Two walks and a double followed to load the bases before Jerry got Mike Phillips on an infield fly and Dave Rader to line out to left fielder Cleon Jones. Koosman allowed only three more San Francisco hits for the rest of the game, while the Mets did not score against Marichal, despite having a runner at second base in five different innings.
Koosman pitched a hitless tenth before the Mets came up again to face Marichal. Ken Boswell started the inning with a single and moved to second base on Willie Mays' sacrifice bunt. Felix Millan followed with a single on which Boswell scored to end the game. The Mets emerged with a victory and Koosman had an extra-inning shutout win.
Notes
- This was the Giants' first loss of the season in extra innings. They had won their previous 11 extra-inning games.
