The Mets had a doubleheader against the Pirates on a Tuesday afternoon at the Polo Grounds. After losing the first game, the Mets came back to gain a split of the twinbill. Marv Throneberry's three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning gave the Mets a 5-4 win over Pittsburgh.
The Pirates scored three times off Mets' starter Bob Moorhead in the first two innings. Dick Stuart got a two-run single in the top of the first and Harvey Haddix singled to score Johnny Logan in the second. The Mets got a run against Haddix when Jim Hickman came home on an infield out in the bottom of the fourth.
Moorhead held the Pirates scoreless in the fifth and sixth innings. In the seventh, Don Leppert homered off Mets' reliever Ray Daviault for a 4-1 Pittsburgh lead. Following a scoreless eighth inning, Bob G. Miller retired the Pirates in order in the top of the ninth.
Richie Ashburn singled and Joe Christopher walked to start the bottom of the ninth for the Mets. Haddix was relieved by Roy Face, who struck out Charlie Neal. Ashburn came home on Felix Mantilla's single and Frank Thomas flied out. Throneberry, pinch-hitting for Hickman, hit a dramatic three-run homer to end the game. The Mets had a spilt of the doubleheader.
