The Mets and Giants began a three-game series on a Tuesday night at Shea Stadium. The teams battled to a scoreless draw for thirteen innings. Finally, Tommie Agee homered in the 14th to give the Mets a 1-0 win.
Gary Gentry and San Francisco's Juan Marichal matched scoreless innings from the first to the tenth. Gentry allowed only four singles to the Giants while his teammates gathered only three singles off Marichal. Gary had five strikeouts in his ten innings while Marichal struck out ten Mets batters.
In the top of the 11th, Tug McGraw retired the Giants with no runs. Marichal got three strikeouts in the bottom half to raise his game total to thirteen. The Mets had a chance to win it in the 12th, but Cleon Jones was throw out at the plate by San Francisco second baseman Ron Hunt. Neither team scored in the 13th.
McGraw set down the Giants in order in the top of the 14th inning. In the bottom half, Agee came up with one out and hammered a pitch from Marichal for a home run. The Mets had a dramatic victory to make happy the crowd of 48,968 at Shea.
